The short version
- We collect what the app needs to work: your account details, your study progress, and anything you choose to send us.
- We don't sell your data and we don't show ads.
- You can delete your account yourself, in Settings, at any time.
- If you're under 18, use The Student Buddy with a parent or guardian's permission.
Who we are
The Student Buddy (thestudentbuddy.com) is a revision app for CBSE students, built and run by Mudit Bhalla in Gurugram, India. In this policy, "we" means The Student Buddy.
What we collect
Account details. When you sign up we ask for your first and last name, a username, and whether you're a student, parent, teacher or smart board. Students and teachers also give their school, board, class and section. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with us. If you sign up with a username instead, you don't need to give an email address.
Study activity. Your streak, the days you studied, the chapters you opened, and your progress and scores on notes, quizzes, flashcards and sample papers.
What you send us. Questions you ask the AI Tutor, photos of notes you upload to be summarised, questions you send to a Study Mate, star ratings, and feedback.
Recordings. Study Mates and teachers can record whiteboard explanations, which include their drawing and their voice. To record, the app asks your browser for microphone access.
Notifications. If you allow notifications, we store the notification address your browser gives us so we can send reminders.
Usage and errors. We use Google Analytics to see which parts of the app are used, such as which screens are opened. If something breaks, the app sends us a technical error report so we can fix it.
Contact form. If you use the contact form on our homepage, we get the name, email address, contact number and message you type in.
Saved on your device only. Settings like dark mode, text size and read-aloud voice, plus unfinished quiz and sample paper answers, are stored in your browser, not on our servers.
How we use it
- To run your account and show you the right class and chapters.
- To track your streak and progress, and send reminders if you've turned them on.
- To answer your questions, through the AI Tutor or a Study Mate.
- To show a linked parent how their child is doing.
- To fix bugs, improve the app, and reply when you contact us.
Who can see your information
Parents. A parent account linked to a student can see that student's streak, days studied, quizzes taken and chapters opened.
Study Mates. A Study Mate sees the question you send them so they can answer it. Their recorded answer is deleted after you've watched it.
Schools. If your school uses The Student Buddy, school staff with admin access can manage accounts for their school.
Services we use to run the app. These companies process data only to provide their service to us:
- Supabase, for accounts, sign-in, the database and file storage.
- Netlify, which hosts the website.
- Resend, which sends emails such as password resets.
- Our AI provider, which receives your AI Tutor questions (with the part of the chapter you're reading), photos of notes you upload, and lesson transcripts, so it can write answers and summaries.
- Google, for Sign in with Google and Google Analytics.
- Your browser's maker (for example Google, Apple or Mozilla), which delivers notifications. When a teacher records a lesson, the live transcript uses the browser's built-in speech recognition, which may be processed by the browser's maker.
We don't sell your personal information, and we don't share it with advertisers. We'll only share it with anyone else if the law requires us to.
How long we keep it
We keep your account information while your account exists. When you delete your account, your profile and study data are removed. Study Mate answers are deleted once they've been watched.
Your choices
- Delete your account at any time from Settings in the app.
- Clear your progress from Settings without deleting your account.
- Turn off notifications in the app or in your browser settings.
- Remove Google access from your Google Account's security settings.
- Ask us to show you, correct or delete your information by emailing us.
Children
The Student Buddy is made for school students, so most people who use it are under 18. If you're under 18, please check with a parent or guardian before you create an account. A parent or guardian can email us at any time to see or delete their child's information.
Keeping it safe
Data is sent over encrypted connections, and database rules limit each account to the information it's allowed to see. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and fix problems quickly.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we'll tell you in the app.
